Johnson Matthey is recruiting Trainee Scientists for its Laboratory Scientist (Chemistry) Level 6 degree apprenticeship run in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University (from September 2026 the apprenticeships will be partnered with Honeywell PLC following a business acquisition). Successful applicants will combine workplace learning with funded study towards an industrial Chemical Science bachelor’s degree, spending approximately 80% of their time on hands-on laboratory experience and 20% on university studies.

You will work in state-of-the-art R&D laboratories on Teesside (Billingham/Stockton), rotating across research groups such as catalyst testing, preparation and characterisation. Typical duties include performing routine experimental tasks under guidance, recording data consistently, applying learned techniques, and assisting on projects that develop new products and processes.

Applications are open to candidates with (or predicted) BBC A-levels (minimum B in Chemistry) and specified GCSE requirements. The programme starts September 2026; applicants should note there is no relocation financial support.

The application closing date is 18th December 2025, with assessment centres scheduled for 20/21/22 January 2026.
