Try EEG experiments, tour research labs and carry out your own project in a university research placement. Explore psychology, genetics, neuroimaging or health; biostatistics sessions cover R, Python and machine learning. Successful applicants receive a £50 book voucher and certificate of attendance.
The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience Youth Awards at King’s College London give young people the chance to experience research first-hand at a leading university department. The programme is designed to introduce students to a range of science-based subjects and to encourage continued study in science and maths, with the wider aim of inspiring future university pathways.
Each award focuses on a different area of the IoPPN, including psychology, neuroimaging, genetics, health and biostatistics. Students can take part in placement-style activities such as tours of research laboratories, trying out EEG experiments, learning about clinical interviews and assessments, hearing from researchers at different career stages, and carrying out their own project.
The Biostatistics & Health Informatics award also includes practical sessions on programming in R and Python, prediction modelling, machine learning, randomisation, clinical trials, AI and natural language processing.
The awards are open to students aged 15 to 18 at state schools in Greater London who are studying GCSEs, A-levels or equivalent qualifications in a relevant subject. Successful applicants receive a £50 book voucher and a certificate of attendance, making the experience a useful addition to a CV or UCAS application as well as an insight into university life and research careers.
