Read, recite or listen to poems inspired by Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, in any language - even ancient Greek. Hear a short introduction from Homer scholar Henry Power, then share the evening with Professor of Poetry A.E. Stallings as emcee, before a wine reception.
This Lady Margaret Hall event brings together poetry lovers for a meeting of the (We Are The) Dead Poets Appreciation Society, with Homer as the featured poet of the evening. Attendees are invited to read, recite, or simply listen to poems that respond to Homer’s work, especially the Iliad and the Odyssey, and to hear a range of classical and contemporary interpretations.
The event is designed to be participatory as well as reflective: guests can sign up to perform poems in any language, including ancient Greek, and an original poem may also be included if it follows another poet’s reading. The atmosphere is informal and literary, with a focus on sharing work inspired by one of the foundational figures of world literature.
Henry Power, Lord White Fellow in English at St Peter’s College and author of Homer Haunted, will give a short introductory talk. A.E. Stallings, the current Professor of Poetry, will emcee the session, and the evening will end with a wine reception.
