Write a 1,500-word essay exploring online harm and accountability, bringing a fresh perspective to a real-world legal question. Make your case through research and argument; finalists attend an awards ceremony, with three cash prizes and a memorial trophy and medal for the winner.
The Law Society of Ireland’s Gráinne O’Neill Memorial Legal Essay Competition invites transition-year students to explore a topical legal issue through creative, thoughtful writing. It is designed for TY students who want to strengthen their research, argument and writing skills while engaging with a real-world question about online harm and accountability.
Entrants must submit a 1,500-word essay on the set question. The competition is judged in two rounds, and the judges are looking especially for freshness, originality and a distinctive approach, so students are encouraged to bring their own perspective rather than simply repeating standard arguments.
Finalists are invited to an awards presentation ceremony, where the winning students and schools are announced. There are three cash prizes for the overall winners, and the winner also receives a special memorial trophy and medal. Schools can contact the Law Society for an information pack.
