This lecture, presented by Fabiënne Tetteroo as part of the RGS 'Be inspired' series, examines the life and roles of Captain James Fitzjames, captain of the Erebus during Franklin’s 1845 Arctic expedition. The talk highlights primary sources and recent research that offer a more accurate, underexplored portrait of this nineteenth-century naval officer.
The event will be held both in-person in the Education Centre at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), 1 Kensington Gore, London, SW7 2AR, and online. Doors open at 14:00 (BST) with the lecture starting at 14:30 and finishing at 15:45.
Advance booking is required; attendees' names will be on a list at the door for in-person admission. The Royal Geographical Society provides accessibility features including step-free access, accessible toilets, assistance dogs, and a hearing loop.
