The London Mathematical Society (LMS) Popular Lecture is an annual public lecture that presents exciting topics in mathematics and its applications. The series aims to promote mathematics through talks that are accessible and inspiring to a wide audience, explaining significant ideas without requiring advanced specialist training.
The lecture series is designed to appeal particularly to students (typically A-level and above) and to members of the public with an interest in serious mathematics. LMS has run these free Popular Lectures since 1982; recordings and videos of many past lectures are available on the LMS YouTube channel, enabling wider access beyond the live event.
The programme features prominent speakers and a variety of topics each year, with the aim of showcasing both the beauty of mathematical ideas and their connections to other disciplines and real-world problems. The LMS also maintains a Popular Lectures mailing list for those who wish to be informed about future lectures and related events.
Free to attend. Videos of previous lectures available on the LMS YouTube channel.
