Mechanical Engineering for High Schoolers at the University of Michigan is an immersive summer institute designed for high school students aged 14 618. The program combines lectures, hands-on exercises, and design projects to teach fundamentals of structural analysis, materials, design and manufacturing processes, electricity, and thermodynamics.
Students work on practical engineering tasks and are encouraged to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills relevant to further study or careers in engineering. The course culminates in a capstone project in which students present a functional miniature automated system that integrates design, electricity, thermodynamics, and material science.
Participants receive portfolio-building documentation including a course completion certificate and a letter of recognition; credit-bearing courses provide grade reports and instructions for requesting a university transcript. There is a supplemental lab materials fee of $195 (USD).
Tuition options are offered for residential (boarding) and day students, with example prices shown on the page. The program is delivered on the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) campus with both residential and day formats available.
