AI in Medicine for High Schoolers at Dartmouth is a two-week, campus-based summer program hosted within the Dartmouth Summer Scholars (Dartmouth College) Summer Institute. The course introduces machine learning techniques applied to healthcare and biomedical data, covering supervised and unsupervised learning, computer vision, natural language processing, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), and Transformer models.
Students work with tools such as Google Colab, PyTorch, and TensorFlow and engage in team projects, case studies, and a mini hackathon prototype. The program emphasises ethical considerations in medical AI (fairness, transparency, data privacy) and offers hands-on activities such as building a CNN-powered web app for pneumonia classification, presenting projects to peers and industry experts, and developing a GitHub portfolio.
Guest speakers and field visits (e. g. , Dali Lab) are part of the experience.
Upon completion students receive a branded Course Completion Certificate, a Letter of Recognition from the Summer Institute, and the opportunity to earn an industry-recognised IBM Z Certification in AI.
