Observe how clinical microbiology samples are received and processed, then follow their journey through a busy lab. See molecular assays, culture plates, antibiotic susceptibility testing and direct microscopy, and talk with training officers about qualifying as a Biomedical Scientist.

This Healthcare Science placement in Microbiology gives students an introduction to good laboratory practice within a clinical microbiology department. You will observe specimen reception, including sample receipt and processing, and see how samples move through a busy laboratory environment.

The placement also includes observing Associate Practitioners carrying out technical tasks, including molecular assays, and watching Microbiology Specialist Biomedical Scientists work with culture plates, antibiotic susceptibility testing and direct microscopy. You will also have the chance to discuss the Biomedical Scientist role with training officers and learn more about the route to qualification.
