Microbiology for High Schoolers at the University of Texas at Austin is a three-week, on-campus summer programme designed to introduce high-school students to the world of microorganisms and university-level laboratory practice. The course covers bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, their roles in human health and disease, factors influencing microbial growth, the history and development of vaccines and antibiotics, and contemporary research topics such as antibiotic resistance and the microbiome.
Students take part in hands-on laboratory sessions (microscopy, culturing, staining), case studies and project-based learning. The programme includes access to UT Austin facilities, interactive classes led by university-approved instructors, field trips and enrichment activities.
Participants receive a Course Completion Certificate and a Letter of Recognition; credit-bearing classes provide grade reports and guidance for requesting transcripts.
Logistics include residential (boarding) and day options. The international programme fee offers visa support, transportation to/from campus, 24/7 arrival assistance and medical insurance. A supplemental lab/materials fee of $150 is required; flights and some personal costs (e.
g. , off-campus meals, toiletries) are not included.
