Support public engagement in Plymouth alongside Ocean Discovery Rangers, leading visitor conversations, using real ocean artefacts, and joining workshops, talks and shows. You can also shadow other programmes or take on an optional Bronze CREST Award, planning and presenting an ocean conservation project.
This work experience placement with the Ocean Discovery Rangers at the National Marine Aquarium is designed for school pupils aged 14 to 17 who have been asked by their school to find a placement. Participants spend time supporting the public engagement team in Plymouth, helping to connect visitors with the Ocean and learn more about marine conservation in a busy visitor setting.
During the placement, students work alongside Ocean Discovery Rangers to take part in 1:1 discussions with members of the public, busking activities using real ocean artefacts, interactive workshops, and talks and shows. There may also be opportunities to shadow other programmes, such as the schools team or behind-the-scenes tours.
The placement is not husbandry-based, so it does not involve caring for or feeding animals.
Alongside the work experience, students can also take part in an optional Bronze CREST Award project. With support from the team, they plan and present an ocean conservation project, building skills in research, organisation and science communication while gaining confidence and experience of working as part of a team.
