Talk with aquarium visitors about marine animals, the ocean and conservation as an Ocean Discovery Ranger. Get on-the-job instruction in marine biology and science communication, then join workshops, school tours, seasonal events and behind-the-scenes tours.

Volunteers with the Ocean Discovery Rangers help the National Marine Aquarium engage, inspire and inform visitors about the ocean, marine animals and conservation. The role focuses on public communication rather than animal care, with volunteers speaking to guests within the aquarium and helping to create a welcoming, educational experience for families and other visitors.

You will receive on-the-job instruction in marine biology and science communication from the Ranger team, so prior knowledge is not essential. The programme is designed for people who are enthusiastic about the marine environment and keen to learn, with the chance to build confidence, communication skills and experience in a supportive environment.

There are plenty of ways to get involved beyond talking with visitors, including workshops, behind-the-scenes tours, seasonal events, community events, school tours, and art and science workshops. The aquarium recommends long-term volunteering of 6 months or more, with shifts available on a flexible basis and at least one day a month required.
