Explore ghost fishing and marine litter through hands-on plankton and microplastics activities, then design a company or product to help the ocean. You’ll also get a practical look at marine science by seeing the aquarium in action.
Sustainable Seas is an interactive outreach event at Newcastle University’s Dove Marine Laboratory, delivered with Healthy Seas. It explores the ghost fishing phenomenon, the impacts on marine ecosystems, and the work being done to tackle marine litter and protect the oceans.
Participants take part in hands-on activities looking at plankton and microplastics, and they also get the chance to design their own company or product that helps the ocean. The event includes a look at the aquarium in action, giving students a practical insight into marine science and conservation work.
The event is aimed at Year 11 to Year 13 pupils with an interest in Marine Sciences or Biology. Teachers or students can complete the registration form, but attending requires consent from a parent/carer and the school. If demand is high, Newcastle University may apply selection criteria.
