Shadow healthcare teams across areas from pharmacy and nursing to laboratory medicine and medical physics, and see how different NHS roles work. Placements range from one-day experiences to four-day opportunities, depending on service capacity and demand.

NHS Forth Valley’s School Pupil Work Experience Programme offers shadowing and observation placements for school pupils who live in, or attend school in, the Forth Valley Board Area. It is designed to give young people a first-hand look at healthcare workplaces and a better understanding of the range of roles within the NHS.

The programme includes options across several service areas, including Administration and IT, Allied Health Professions, Clinical Physiology, Laboratory Medicine, Nursing & Midwifery, Pharmacy, Decontamination Services and Medical Physics. Placement length varies by area, from one-day experiences to longer placements of up to four days, and availability depends on staff capacity and service demand.

Placements are arranged during weekdays in the academic year and are subject to change or cancellation at short notice if service needs change. Some departments are unavailable for placements, and preference is given to S5 and S6 pupils when requests are made early in the year, particularly for those working towards UCAS applications.
