Shadow staff in a real health or social care workplace for up to five days, observing professionals and asking questions about the role you want to explore. There’s no hands-on clinical work; instead, build communication, teamwork and timekeeping skills.

NHS Highland work experience placements give pupils, college students and adults a chance to shadow staff in a real workplace and gain a deeper understanding of a chosen role. Placements are designed for people who already have a clearer idea of the career pathway they want to explore and want a more detailed insight into day-to-day work in health and social care.

The placement is typically short, usually lasting between one and five days, and can provide up to one week of shadowing in the workplace. It is a chance to observe professionals, ask questions and learn more about the responsibilities, routines and expectations of the role you are interested in.

NHS Highland notes that certain areas have restrictions on who can take part.

Participants do not undertake hands-on clinical experience, particularly in health and social care settings. Instead, the focus is on observation, shadowing and developing employability skills such as timekeeping, teamwork, problem solving, flexibility, communication and confidence.

Applications are handled through NHS Highland’s Employability Team via the Work Experience Coordinator, and the organisation carries out health and safety checks, risk assessments and support arrangements before and during the placement.
