Northumbria University is running a Year 12 Applied Science Day at its campus. The event runs between 10:00 and 14:10 and includes three practical workshops from Chemistry, Food and Nutrition, and Biological Sciences.
The sessions cover hands-on activities such as thin-layer chromatography to compare freshness of spinach, investigations into sugar replacement and health impacts in food, and practical diagnostics techniques used in identifying diabetes. This event is limited to 75 places and is offered on a first come, first served basis; the university may limit the number of places per school.
Students who sign up are expected to attend. The programme involves handling and consuming food products, so participants must provide dietary requirements and notify staff of any allergies. To book a place, schools should complete the booking form embedded on the event page (Gecko form).
