Fancy shaping debate on Europe? Enter the Oireachtas Essay Competition to explore parliamentary politics in English or Irish, research original ideas, sharpen your argument-writing, and get your voice seen by policymakers—build skills that boost your uni and career options.

This essay competition invites students to write in English or Irish on the topic “Parliamentary Politics Matters for Europe / Tábhacht na Polaitíochta Parlaimintí don Eorap”. It is designed for young people who want to explore political ideas in an original, thoughtful, and well-researched way.

The competition is open to Senior Cycle students on the island of Ireland, including Transition Year, 5th Year and 6th Year students in the Republic of Ireland, as well as AS level and A level students. Entrants are encouraged to go beyond the school curriculum, drawing on what they have studied in subjects such as History, Economics, Business Studies, Religious Education, Politics and Society, Irish, and English.

Entries must be between 900 and 1,000 words and include references or citations. Judges are looking for strong research, a clear and sustained argument, and overall coherence, as well as lively, engaging writing and good presentation.

Students are also expected to draft and re-draft their work, and the essay must be their own work.
