Outdoor Activity Instructor Apprenticeship Level 3 - Skern Lodge

Skern Training & Skills (Skern Lodge and the Ultimate Activity Centre) are offering a Level 3 Outdoor Activity Instructor Apprenticeship based in Appledore, North Devon. This role provides practical, hands-on training across watersports and outdoor pursuits within a well-resourced centre, with mentoring, supervision and NGB-aligned training.

The apprenticeship is a route into a career in outdoor education and offers the potential to progress to Level 5 on successful completion.

Main duties include planning and preparing activities, demonstrating and instructing groups, carrying out safety checks, explaining safety procedures, assessing and managing risk, and promoting inclusion and environmental stewardship. Apprentices will work as part of a team to support centre provision for a wide range of groups and individuals.

The role is active and requires good physical fitness; average hours are 40 per week with work across Monday to Sunday including evenings.

Training to be provided includes the Level 3 Outdoor Activity Instructor Apprenticeship and Functional Skills in Maths and English if required. The position may include on-site accommodation for the season and meals are provided as part of working arrangements.

Provisional start is March 2026 (fixed term for 9 months) and there may be continuity of employment and opportunities for further progression for successful candidates.
