Apply NowNeed reliable travel to college or sixth form? Discover Somerset Council’s updated over-16 student transport — grab discounted tickets, pay contactlessly or via apps, and secure daily or season passes to get you to post-16 study with ease.
This Somerset Council page explains how students aged over 16 can pay for and access student transport to post-16 education. From Autumn 2024 more ticketing options (including contactless payments and apps) will be available via college services.
Bus operators continue to offer a range of daily and season tickets, including discounted student fares; the council refers readers to its Post-16 Transport Policy for full details. Sixth form students who wish to travel on a contracted school bus for the next academic year can apply for a paid seat where space exists.
Somerset Council will send a pay agreement that sets out terms and the cost. Payments may be made annually, by instalments, or by monthly direct debit; choosing direct debit requires consent to a full credit check and the council may withdraw the option based on results.
If a student stops travelling, the council will refund any money owed; there is a reduction in charge if a student has not used transport for 10 consecutive days due to ill health, but not for holidays or non-attendance. The page notes there is no guarantee of seat availability and that provision must comply with PSVAR 2020.
It also provides links to the Post-16 Travel Policy 2024/25 and an Excel of bus routes for colleges. For further detail and to use the service, users are directed to the online payment/service on this page.
