The Discover Medicine Academy is a two-week residential summer programme held on the Oxford University campus that introduces students to core medical topics and practical clinical skills. Students explore anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and medical research, practise clinical tasks such as taking vital signs and assessing X-rays, and learn basic surgical techniques under the guidance of expert tutors (typically from Oxford and Cambridge).
The course includes a four-hour Hospital Challenge where students visit a hospital, meet real patients, take histories and collaborate on diagnostic and treatment decisions. The programme also offers masterclasses, ethics debates, a mini clinical trial experience, and a final class focused on a tutor's personal research area.
Students finish with a graduation ceremony and receive a Certificate of Achievement; eligible students may also receive a personalised Letter of Recommendation and can apply to the year-long Ambassador Programme.
This course is designed for motivated young learners (targeted at ages 12-14) seeking an immersive introduction to medicine and to strengthen future university applications. Social, cultural and sporting activities - including day trips, college experiences and an International Boat Ball - run alongside academic sessions to provide a broad residential experience of university life.
