Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) offers short observational work experience placements across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical roles. Placements are designed for students to shadow staff and gain insight into day-to-day responsibilities in areas such as medicine, nursing, midwifery, pharmacy, radiography, therapies (physio/OT), biomedical science, clinical engineering, finance, health administration, HR and estates.
This is an observational opportunity to develop understanding of workplace behaviours, values and career pathways in the NHS. Placements are usually 1-3 days long (maximum one week). OUH run application windows three times a year (autumn, spring and summer) and capacity varies by department and site; applicants should apply during the advertised window using the online form.
Priority is given to applicants from Oxfordshire schools and the Trust's immediate area. Some specialist roles are only available at particular hospital sites. Age and placement limits vary by area: non-clinical placements are open from 15 years; clinical areas from 16/Year 11 (observation only); maternity services (excluding maternity theatres) from 17/Year 12+; and theatres (excluding maternity theatres) from 18.
Virtual work-related learning (via Springpod) is also promoted and is open to students aged from 13 in the South East of England, with each online programme taking around 6-8 hours and providing a certificate on completion.
