This four-week evening course at The Photographers' Gallery introduces participants to photobook theory and practice, blending theoretical ideas with close, hands-on readings of photobooks. Sessions combine presentations from the course leader with group discussion and practical activities, and participants are provided with lecture slides and a list of resources for further study.
Across four weekly sessions participants will explore themes including perception, politics, positioning and the potentials of photobooks, connecting individual reading practices to wider photographic histories, materiality and publishing cultures. The course features and discusses work by emerging and established practitioners (examples listed by the organisers include Sunil Gupta, Liz Johnson Artur, Chris Killip, Celine Marchbank, Sakiko Nomura, Dayanita Singh and Dafna Talmor).
The course is led by Dr Briony Carlin. It is open to all (no prior knowledge required). Details on how to access the event will be confirmed on registration; by booking, attendees agree to The Photographers' Gallery's Terms & Conditions.
