This short two-week online course, delivered by the University of Leeds on FutureLearn, introduces Vsevolod Meyerhold’s physical theatre technique of biomechanics and the biomechanical étude known as ‘The Slap’. Through a mixture of video, animation, discussion forums and practical exercises, learners study the historical and political context of Meyerhold’s work and practise repeatable physical exercises designed to develop balance, awareness and expression.
The course is presented as a taster for prospective undergraduate students and school/college learners, and is specifically designed to complement existing study in theatre, performance or related subjects. Activities include warm-ups, practical études such as the ‘shake and shake’ and ‘slap and return to neutral’, and a small production task (video, image or prose) that demonstrates understanding of the technique.
Learners join a global online classroom, contribute to discussions, complete weekly tasks and a concluding test. Complete 90% of course steps and all assessments to earn a certificate. No prior experience is necessary, but participants should be reasonably fit for light movement work.
