Want a head start on uni life? Join Queen Mary Futures to explore university subjects, build academic skills, and grow your network through after-school sessions on campus — gain experience, confidence and university insight tailored for students from under‑represented backgrounds.
Queen Mary Futures is an outreach and access programme from Queen Mary University of London for talented students who are under-represented in higher education. It is designed to broaden participants' networks, knowledge and skills while introducing them to university-level study.
The programme is aimed at eligible Year 12 students and takes place at Queen Mary's East London campuses. Over four weeks of after-school activities, students can explore a range of university subjects, experience campus-based learning, and build confidence for the transition to higher education.
Different subject strands are available, covering areas such as computing, science, economics, engineering, English, history, politics, mathematics, and medicine. Sessions are delivered in person, and some activities may be recorded for later on-demand viewing by participants.
Travel expenses can also be claimed for return journeys to campus on the days attended, with advance claims available for some students who have experienced care or are estranged from both parents.

Location
- In Year 12, or first year of Level 3 study, at a state-funded, non-fee-paying school or college in the UK
- Be a Home registered student or expect to be by the time they apply for higher education
- Have achieved at least five GCSE grades 5-9, with at least a grade 4 in both English and Maths
- For the Medicine and Dentistry subject strand, have a minimum of six GCSE passes at grades 777666 including Biology, Chemistry, English Language or English Literature, and Mathematics
- Meet all of the programme's essential criteria and at least two Widening Participation criteria
- Currently, or previously, lived in local authority care, or be permanently estranged from both parents
- Have a disability defined under the Equality Act 2010
- Be living in an area of high deprivation (IMD Decile 1, 2, 3 or 4) or in an area of socio-economic disadvantage (ACORN group M, N, P, Q, R, S or U)
- Be a young adult carer
- Were previously entitled to Free School Meals during Key Stage 4, or are currently in receipt of the 16-19 bursary
- Neither parent or carer has attended higher education in the UK or abroad
- Be a refugee or asylum seeker
- Be from a Gypsy, Roma, or Traveller background, including Showmen and Boater communities
- Attend one of Queen Mary's sponsored academy schools: Royal Greenwich Trust School, St Paul's Way Trust School, or Drapers' Academy
- Attend a school whose attainment performance is below the national average
- For the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science strand, be studying A level Maths, Computer Science, or Physics
- For the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science strand, be studying a BTEC Extended Diploma in Computing or Engineering
- For the Biological and Behavioural Sciences strand, be studying A level Biology
- For the Biological and Behavioural Sciences strand, be studying the BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science
- For the Chemical Sciences strand, be studying A level Chemistry
- For the Chemical Sciences strand, be studying the Applied Science BTEC Extended Diploma
- For the Economics and Finance strand, be studying A level Mathematics
- For the Economics and Finance strand, be studying a BTEC Extended Diploma in any subject alongside A level Mathematics
- For the Engineering and Materials Science strand, be studying A level Maths plus a second science subject excluding Psychology
- For the Engineering and Materials Science strand, be studying the Engineering BTEC Extended Diploma alongside A level Mathematics
- For the Mathematical and Physical Sciences strand, be studying A level Maths
- For the Mathematical and Physical Sciences strand, be studying the Engineering BTEC Extended Diploma
- For the Medicine and Dentistry strand, be studying Chemistry or Biology and one other science subject, including Mathematics
- For the Medicine and Dentistry strand, BTEC qualifications are not accepted
