This ResearchWorks event at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama celebrates the launch of The Cambridge Companion to Electronic Dance Music, a new edited volume that brings together interdisciplinary perspectives on electronic dance music as culture, practice, and experience. The launch introduces the book’s core themes across sound, space, technology and social life and situates the collection as an accessible entry point into contemporary electronic music studies.
Editors Toby Young and Hillegonda Rietveld will introduce the collection and reflect on its interdisciplinary approach. Contributors Cat Rossi and Chris Christodoulou will discuss specific chapters: Rossi on how nightclub spaces are shaped by sound and design, and Christodoulou on drum and bass as a high-tempo sonic culture emerging from 1990s London and its social and urban contexts.
The session combines short presentations and expert discussion led by established researchers and practitioners in music, architecture and media. The event is free but booking is required and is offered both in person and online.
The in-person session takes place at the Guildhall School (Lecture Recital Room, Silk Street, Barbican) and is suitable for students, researchers, music professionals and members of the public with an interest in electronic music, sound studies and cultural practice.
