Compose music inspired by an image, poem or quotation, using anything from software to voice. Submit an MP3 of up to four minutes; winners receive a £50 voucher and an invitation to a workshop day at Robinson College, Cambridge.
The New Directions Composition Prize invites young people to create an original piece of music inspired by a choice of images, poems or quotations. The competition is run by Robinson College, University of Cambridge, and it welcomes entrants with any level of musical experience, from first-time composers to experienced musicians.
Entrants can use whatever approach suits them best: composition software, piano, guitar, voice, a written score, or a mix of these methods. The finished entry must be submitted as an MP3 sound file, and the composition should be no longer than four minutes.
Supporting prompts and guidance are provided to help students get started and develop their ideas.
Entries are judged by Prof. Jeremy Thurlow, Director of Studies in Music at Robinson College, and Rebecca Delphi. The competition has age categories for younger pupils and sixth form students, with winners and highly commended entrants in each category.
Winners receive a £50 voucher and are invited to a workshop day at Robinson College, Cambridge, with musical activities and the chance to explore the College and University.
