This beginner-friendly course introduces robotics through hands-on activities using the Micro:bit and MoveMotor, an easy-to-use micro-controller and robot buggy. You will programme the device to flash lights, beep through its speakers, and drive a buggy around an obstacle course while learning the basic principles of robots and robotics.
The course is designed for learners who are new to robotics, although you should already have basic digital skills. It provides a practical entry point into the subject and could lead on to Exploring Robotics and other digital courses.
Assessment is through written work, and you will need to bring basic study equipment such as notebooks and pens.

Location
- This is a beginner's course and no experience of robots or robotics is required.
- Applicants should already have basic digital skills such as those covered in Northern College's First Steps with Computers, Getting Confident with Computers, and Next Steps with Computers courses.
The course is free subject to eligibility criteria. If you are not eligible, the course costs £50. There is no option to pay to stay residentially if you do not meet the criteria for residential funding. Most students are eligible to study and stay residentially for free, and this will be confirmed during the application process.
