Explore how aviation medicine shaped human spaceflight in a lecture by a spacesuit physiology expert from King’s College London. Hear examples from RAF research and contemporary work supporting future space explorers, with in-person London and online attendance plus a drinks reception.
Join the Royal Aeronautical Society for the 2026 Stewart Memorial Named Lecture, delivered by Dr Peter D Hodkinson, Director of the Spacesuit Physiology Laboratory and Head of Aerospace Medicine at King’s College London. The talk, From Aviation Medicine to Human Spaceflight, looks back at the history of UK aviation medicine and explores how early research and leadership in the field have continued to shape human spaceflight today.
Dr Hodkinson will draw on examples from the RAF Physiological Laboratory and the RAF Institute of Aviation Medicine to show how physiological challenges first encountered in aviation still influence modern space exploration. He will also bring in contemporary work from King’s College London to highlight how human-centred research and design are helping to support the health, wellbeing and performance of future space explorers.
The lecture is suitable for a varied audience and is available both in person at RAeS HQ in London and online. It includes registration, the lecture itself and a drinks reception afterwards. Attendance is free for members and non-members, and under-18s may attend with a guardian.
