A free online talk uses high-speed imaging to uncover insect flight movements too fast or small for the human eye, from wingbeats and airflow to the tiny structures controlling each beat.
Insect Hour is a free online talk from the Royal Entomological Society, held on Zoom. This session explores insect flight through the lens of high-speed imaging, biomechanics and mechanics, showing how researchers can reveal movement patterns that are otherwise too fast or too small for the human eye to see.
Dr Simon Walker will discuss the hidden world of insect flight, including how wings and bodies move during free flight, how beating wings interact with the air, and how muscles and tiny mechanical structures control each wingbeat. The talk also looks at the remarkable diversity of insect flight, from hoverflies and blowflies to mosquitoes.
The session includes time for questions and discussion towards the end, making it suitable for anyone interested in insects, movement, and the science behind biological systems. It is open to both members and non-members, with no fee to attend.
