Explore how original maps and contemporary artists’ views reveal the sea routes behind early global trade. Former BBC World Service journalist Nicholas Nugent traces how ideas of ‘globalism’ predate the modern era, connecting distant parts of the world.

Nicholas Nugent, a former BBC World Service journalist, presents a wide-ranging exploration of global history through the lens of sea trade. Using original maps alongside contemporary artists’ views, the talk traces the origins of global maritime networks and shows how ideas of ‘globalism’ long predate the modern era.

The event is organised by the Royal Geographical Society’s South West regional committee and takes place in Tiverton. It is open to all, free to attend, and does not require advance booking. The lecture offers an engaging introduction to the people, places and routes that helped shape early international trade and connect distant parts of the world.
