The talk examines Javier Marías’s use of ellipses and non-events as drivers of narration and considers how similar mechanisms operate in the speaker’s own fiction, analysing how what is left unsaid shapes fictional worlds and meaning.
This is an in-person memorial lecture sponsored by the Centre for Visual Cultures and Instituto Cervantes London. The event is open to the public and aims to engage students, academics and members of the wider community with questions of narration, liminality and the ethics of silence in literature.
Booking is required via the Eventbrite link provided on the Royal Holloway events page. For further information contact centreforvisualcultures@royalholloway.ac.uk or call +44 1784 443249. The lecture takes place in Founder's Main Lecture Theatre on the Royal Holloway Egham campus.
