Step into the role of a clinical bacteriologist and use research-grade laboratory equipment to investigate DNA samples from new outbreaks of bacterial disease. Students will perform restriction enzyme digests and gel electrophoresis to analyse DNA, learn about restriction enzymes and evolution, and use DNA evidence to decide what medical advice they would give to patients of the outbreak.
This practical workshop takes place in the Urenco Young Scientist Centre’s teaching laboratory at the Royal Institution, giving students a chance to work in a real lab environment. For safety reasons all participants must wear closed-toe shoes and tie back long hair.
The workshop includes a 30-minute unsupervised lunch break; students should bring their own packed lunch and drink. With appropriate permission, students aged 15-18 may leave the building during the lunch break.
Booking is via Eventbrite (online ticketing) and Eventbrite adds a small booking fee. Refunds for this workshop are only guaranteed if tickets are cancelled at least 14 calendar days before the event. For queries contact the Royal Institution events team by phone on 020 7409 2992 or email events@ri.
