This Royal Institution holiday workshop introduces students to fluid dynamics through live demonstrations and hands-on activities. Participants explore questions such as why objects move the way they do when thrown, and what carries a rubber duck across the ocean, using mathematics to understand how things move through air and water.
The session focuses on the forces that govern fluid flow and how mathematicians model the physical world. Students will do some mathematical tinkering alongside the demonstrations, helping them connect the ideas to real-world examples and see how maths and science work together.
The workshop is designed for young people in Years 10 to 13 and gives them a chance to go beyond the school curriculum. It is part of the Royal Institution's holiday workshop offer, which is aimed at building curiosity around STEM subjects through practical, expert-led learning.
