Royal Institution Holiday Workshops: Digital Designs to Physical Products

This hands-on holiday workshop explores how digital designs can be turned into real-world products. Participants investigate the connection between mathematics, coding and manufacturing by creating their own embroidered patterns and seeing how technology can bring those designs to life.

Using TurtleStitch, a free programming language, young people design geometric patterns through simple coding commands. Those digital creations are then stitched onto fabric using an embroidery machine, helping participants understand how software, measurement and manufacturing work together in engineering and industry.

The workshop is aimed at young people who enjoy making, designing and problem-solving. It gives students a practical introduction to creative computing and engineering ideas, showing how digital tools can be used to produce physical objects in a fun, accessible way.
