Join this Royal Institution workshop to build practical skills, meet industry insight and boost your uni or career options.
In this interactive holiday workshop, students explore how nuclear energy works and the role it plays in creating a more sustainable future. Developed in collaboration with Urenco, the session introduces nuclear science from carbon-free fuel through to electricity generation and real-world applications such as nuclear medicine.
Participants take part in hands-on activities, including building a model centrifuge, learning how the national grid distributes electricity, and investigating future technologies like nuclear fusion. The workshop is designed to give young people a practical insight into science beyond the classroom, with opportunities to observe, collect data, analyse results and work collaboratively.
The session takes place in the Urenco Young Scientist Centre’s teaching laboratory. It is intended for students in Years 10 to 13, and attendees must follow safety guidance, including wearing closed-toe shoes and tying back long hair.
Students should also bring a packed lunch and a drink.
