Join the Royal Navy on the Accelerated Apprentice Scheme (Submariner) to train and work as a Marine Engineer Submariner (MESM) or Weapon Engineer Submariner (WESM). You'll be paid to study while spending most of your apprenticeship working on board submarines, gaining hands-on experience with advanced mechanical and electronic systems.
The role is based at Navy Command HQ, The Admiral Sir Henry Leach Building, Portsmouth, and the advertised start date is 2 June 2026. The apprenticeship comprises on-the-job learning and specialist training delivered by the Royal Navy.
The training route is Engineering Technician (Level 3) and includes Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas in Maritime Defence (Foundation and Development competence and knowledge). Apprentices can also gain additional academic qualifications such as GCSEs, A-levels or degrees as part of their development.
You will work 40 hours per week and the role is paid: £33,000 a year with a £5,000 Dolphins bonus on qualification and additional sea pay when fully qualified. The programme lasts approximately 3 years 6 months, there are 60 positions available, and applicants should meet the listed GCSE and fitness requirements.
