The Royal Navy Defence STEM undergraduate scheme funds students studying an approved engineering-based Bachelor's degree prior to joining the Royal Navy as an Engineer Officer. Successful applicants receive a £5,000 per year bursary, tuition fees covered up to £9,535 per year, and the opportunity to earn training pay through participation in the University Royal Naval Unit (up to 45 days per year, approximately £2,000).
On completion of study, participants are guaranteed a place on Royal Navy Initial Officer Training at Britannia Royal Naval College.
You can apply from your final year before university through to the end of Year 2 of a Bachelor's course. Applicants must hold the required GCSE / Nat 5 results and be on track to achieve the necessary UCAS points (96 UCAS points required).
Candidates must be ready to, or already be undertaking, an approved engineering-related degree such as Mechanical, Marine, Electronic, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or Robotic Engineering.
The selection process begins by registering interest and submitting an application. Shortlisted candidates undertake the Defence Aptitude Assessment (DAA), an interview (usually via the Shine video platform), the Admiralty Interview Board (Pre-Recorded Interview and Group Planning Exercise), and a four-day Candidate Preparation Course which includes fitness and medical eligibility checks.
After successful completion of studies and a security check, candidates proceed to Initial Officer Training.
