Explore Donne’s use of the Psalms in poetry and sermons with Katherine Rundell, through an illustrated talk and readings from his writing. Hear how these texts gave him language for grief, longing, doubt and devotion.
Join Katherine Rundell for an exploration of poet and preacher John Donne’s interpretations of the Psalms. In this illustrated talk, she examines how Donne returned again and again to the Psalms in his poetry and sermons, and how these biblical texts gave him a language for grief, longing, doubt and devotion.
The event includes readings from Donne’s writing to illuminate his distinctive approach and its lasting influence.
The talk is part of Day of Psalms, a wider day of events curated by writer and artist Edmund de Waal. The programme celebrates the Psalms across cultures and centuries, considering them as songs of exile, diaspora and devotion.
The event takes place at the Schwarzman Centre in Oxford and lasts for one hour, including time for audience engagement through the wider day’s programming.
