As a Scientific Degree Apprentice at Sellafield Ltd you will learn how to work in nuclear facilities as part of a technical team alongside experienced professionals. The programme includes a 3-month induction at a local off-site training facility, practical work placements based at the Sellafield site or satellite offices, and academic learning delivered one day per week at a training provider.

The Degree Apprentice Programme consists of Level 5 ST0380 Nuclear Technician Apprenticeship combined with a Level 5 Foundation Degree or HND in Engineering or Science aligned to the chosen pathway. For candidates with potential to progress further, there is the option to move to Level 6 ST0289 (Nuclear Scientist/Nuclear Engineer) and complete a Level 6 Bachelor's degree (BEng or BSc) over an additional two-year period.

Progress is assessed via government standards, evidence folders, and a final independent review. Applicants should have a passion for STEM and meet the specified entry requirements; successful candidates will need to obtain appropriate security and medical clearances after a conditional offer.

Qualification Outcome

Level 5 ST0380 Nuclear Technician Apprenticeship; Level 5 Foundation Degree/Higher National Diploma (HND) in Engineering or Science. Potential progression to Level 6 ST0289 Nuclear Scientist/Nuclear Engineer Apprenticeship and a Level 6 Bachelor's degree (BEng or BSc).

  • Degree apprenticeships target A-Level students or equivalents.
  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), including Maths, English Language, and one Science or Engineering subject.
  • At least 96 UCAS points from A-Level/T-Level, preferably in STEM subjects (Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Physics), but not mandatory.
  • Other Level 3 STEM or vocational qualifications may be accepted.
  • If lacking A-Level Maths or higher Engineering, candidates must have a Grade 6 (B) in GCSE Maths.
  • Functional Skills Level 2 is considered equivalent to GCSE Grade 4 (C).
  • Candidates are required to achieve appropriate security and medical clearances following a conditional offer of employment.
