Apply NowTrain as a Laboratory Scientist through a degree apprenticeship at the University of Kent: blended learning, workplace projects, summer schools and a BSc on completion.
The University of Kent's Scientist Apprenticeship (Degree Levels 4-6) trains apprentices to work as qualified Laboratory Scientists across areas such as chemistry, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, formulated products, nuclear power and analytical services. The programme combines workplace-based technical and scientific duties with academic study, and is designed to add value to an employer while apprentices progress through a BSc-level qualification.
Delivery is by blended learning (online via the VLE Moodle plus face-to-face teaching) together with significant work-based learning and projects. Apprentices attend two face-to-face "Summer Schools" (typically held in August or September) for practical assessments and examinations.
The programme duration is 54 months with an additional 6 months allocated for the End-Point Assessment (EPA).
On successful completion apprentices are awarded a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in applied bioscience or applied chemical sciences and may use the apprenticeship outcomes to apply for professional registration (RSci/RSciTech) through relevant bodies. Entry requirements include five GCSEs (including English and Maths at Grade 4+) and at least two A-levels including Chemistry or Biology, or completion of a Level 3 Laboratory Technical Apprenticeship.
Start dates are offered in September and January.
Bachelor of Science (BSc) in either chemical or bioscience; apprenticeship certificate can be used to apply for RSci/RSciTech status through relevant professional bodies
The cost of the programme is £27,000 per apprentice; this can be paid from the employer's apprenticeship levy or by government co-investment (which can cover up to 95% of the fees). Accommodation and travel costs for Summer Schools should be funded by the employer and are not payable from the apprenticeship levy or government funding.
