This week-long work experience programme introduces learners to operations, safety case and health physics professions at Sellafield. Based across the Seascale main site and Energus in Lillyhall, it gives participants a practical look at how a major nuclear site is run safely and how different technical teams work together to manage risk, hazards and compliance.
Learners take part in group activities, site visits, project work and presentations. The programme includes technical exposure such as hazard assessment, operator safety principles, health physics duties, process operations and lean manufacturing concepts, alongside professional skills development in teamwork, problem-solving and communicating technical information to professionals.
A key part of the experience is a main project where learners create a simplified safety case for a mock or model nuclear plant scenario. They identify hazards, assess consequences and likelihood, propose mitigations, and present their findings.
Participants also complete practical tasks in simulated environments, using PPE, contamination control techniques and specialist equipment while observing real teams and plant conditions.
