The Volunteer to Career Programme at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is designed for people who are interested in a future career in healthcare and want practical experience to help them get started. It combines volunteering within the Trust with supportive learning sessions, giving participants the chance to understand more about working in the NHS while contributing to patients, visitors and staff.
Participants complete a minimum of 50 hours of volunteering and attend five interactive evening sessions led by the Trust’s Head of Non-Clinical Education. These sessions cover Trust values, building confidence and resilience, identifying strengths and career pathways, and improving applications and personal statements.
The programme also includes support from a designated member of staff throughout, alongside recruitment checks and volunteer training before starting.
The programme is intended to help people take their next steps, whether that is applying for jobs, pursuing apprenticeships, or moving on to college or university courses. It is especially useful for anyone who wants to build confidence, develop transferable skills and gain a clearer sense of their future direction in healthcare or related education and training routes.
