Explore local government through a structured placement and gain practical insight into public service careers. Build confidence and team-working skills while learning what employers look for. Your placement will have clear roles, duties and expectations.
Southend-on-Sea City Council offers work experience placements for young people who want to learn more about local government and the variety of roles within a large public sector organisation. The placements are designed to help participants understand what the council does, develop workplace skills, and gain practical insight into public service careers while making a positive difference to the local community.
During a placement, students can build confidence, strengthen team-working and flexibility, and develop their awareness of the skills employers look for. The council says placements should be purposeful, structured and relevant to the young person’s studies or career aspirations, with clear roles, duties and expectations for both the student and the council.
To apply, candidates need to download and complete the application form and return it by email. Additional signatures are required for some applicants, including teacher or tutor input for those under 16 and parent or guardian consent for those under 18.
The council also asks applicants to submit their form well in advance, as arranging a suitable placement can take time.
