Babcock's Space Systems Engineering Degree Apprenticeship is a five-year programme combining on-the-job training with a BEng (Hons) in Space Systems Engineering awarded by the University of Portsmouth. Apprentices are embedded within the Skynet Service Delivery Wrap (SDW) programme, working on secure satellite communications that support UK and NATO operations.

You will typically spend four days per week on placement at one of Babcock’s engineering locations (Hawthorn in Corsham or Oakhanger in Bordon) and one day per week at university during term time.

Throughout the apprenticeship you will rotate across Skynet engineering teams, supporting tasks that increase in complexity as your skills grow - from systems testing and hardware design to software and communications engineering. Academic modules cover electronics, mechanical and electrical systems, software engineering and space communications, with additional study time provided during examination periods and project work.

Accommodation expenses will be covered when travel away from your home base is required (including visits to other Babcock sites such as Ashton House, Bristol).

On successful completion you will be invited to apply for engineering roles within Babcock and will have progressed toward professional registration as an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer. The programme includes personal development training, an Apprentice Development Programme, and opportunities to participate in STEM outreach and volunteering.
