This is a two-week summer program at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) exploring the intersection of sports and social justice. The course examines issues such as race and gender dynamics in sport, violence among players, performance-enhancing substances, recruitment ethics, and college sports reform.
Students engage in seminars, case studies, and discussions aimed at developing advocacy skills and critical perspectives on sports-related social issues. Participants complete a capstone project in which they design a proposal for an athlete-representation agency that supports social justice initiatives.
Projects culminate in a mock draft and slide-deck presentations. The program offers both residential (boarding) and day (commuter) options, includes supervised campus activities, and provides academic reports and, for credit-bearing courses, instructions for requesting a university transcript.
On completion, students receive a Course Completion Certificate and a Letter of Recognition from the Summer Institute. The program includes campus housing (for residential students), meals, daily activities, and supervised excursions; certain specialised academies may require additional fees.
