A nuclear fusion physicist and astrophysicist explains the science behind fusion and how researchers are working towards practical applications. Explore why it matters for low-carbon power, connect physics and STEM skills to societal challenges, and hear about pathways into future energy and research careers.
Could nuclear fusion help power a greener future? This online session introduces young people to the science behind nuclear fusion and explores how it connects to real careers in physics and the wider STEM sector.
It is designed as an engaging entry point for students who are curious about energy, research and the future of low-carbon power.
The talk takes place during Green Careers Week and is led by nuclear fusion physicist and astrophysicist Dr Mark R Smith FRAS. He shares insights from his experience presenting to GCSE and A-level students, helping attendees understand what nuclear fusion is, why it matters, and how scientists are working towards practical applications.
The session also highlights how physics, STEM skills and career choices can connect to the challenges facing society. It is a chance for students to hear directly from someone working in this exciting area of science and to think about the range of pathways that could lead into future energy and research careers.
