Take part in hands-on excavation and survey at a public archaeology field school open to all. Learn trowelling, site survey and finds processing with residential or day-based options; longer stays add evening lectures and local walks, plus geophysical data collection for archaeological mapping.
Strata Florida’s archaeology field school is a public dig open to all, offering a fully accessible training programme in archaeological excavation and survey. It welcomes people of all ages and experience levels, from complete beginners to those who want to build on existing skills.
Participants can choose from residential or day-based options and take part in hands-on excavation and survey work. Training covers practical techniques such as trowelling, site survey, finds processing and geophysical data collection for archaeological mapping.
Longer stays also include evening lectures, local walks and wider trips across West Wales to help place the site in its landscape.
The programme is designed to be inclusive and supportive, with onsite wellbeing and mental health support partners. It is suitable for members of the public, students and volunteers who want meaningful experience of archaeology, alongside a better understanding of Strata Florida’s history, heritage and Welsh cultural connections.
