Fancy making a real difference in your community? Join Suffolk Community Libraries as a volunteer—build skills, lead children's activities, support dementia groups, run digital help or café shifts, and boost your CV while meeting people. Apply by 17 June 2026.

Suffolk Community Libraries recruit volunteers across numerous community roles at many library branches across Suffolk. Roles include supporting summer literacy activities (Reading Quest), facilitating children’s Lego sessions, running dementia and Parkinson’s support groups, café volunteering, a home delivery library service, Friends group trusteeship, garden maintenance, digital support (Get Connected), and general library duties such as shelving and customer support.

Activities range from delivering structured sessions with children and families to supporting older adults, assisting with events, and helping with day-to-day running of library spaces. Commitments and requirements vary by role: some roles specify minimum ages (e.

g. , Reading Quest 12+, Café volunteer 16+, many outreach/support roles 18+), minimum time commitments (Reading Quest: 3-4 hours/week for ~6 weeks; Café volunteer: minimum 6 months), and role-specific checks or skills (DBS and training for Get Connected; car access for Home Library Service).

  • Reading Quest: 12 years of age and over (parental consent required for ages 12-18).
  • Café volunteer: 16+ and minimum 6 month commitment.
  • 5-a-side CHESS volunteer: 18+.
  • Get Connected volunteer: confident with digital technology; role requires a DBS check and safeguarding and GDPR training (provided).
  • Home Library Service volunteer: access to a car (travel expenses are paid).
  • Home Education volunteer: able-bodied enough to use stairs and lift/carry items.
  • Dementia Group volunteer: beneficial (but not essential) to have existing understanding of dementia.
Pay & Benefits

Travel expenses are paid for Home Library Service volunteers. DBS, safeguarding and GDPR training provided for Get Connected volunteers. General volunteer roles are unpaid.
