Explore at least two areas of public sector work through an unpaid placement in a real office or service environment. Work alongside supportive staff, learn what different jobs involve and find out what training a role may need.

Sunderland City Council offers a wide range of unpaid work experience opportunities across its services. Placements are designed to give participants an insight into public sector work and help them decide whether a job or career is right for them.

The placement is intended to build confidence and workplace knowledge, with opportunities to learn new skills, understand what different jobs involve and consider the training needed for a role. Participants are supported by friendly, hardworking staff and can gain valuable experience of working in a real office or service environment.

Applicants complete a short online form and should identify at least two areas of work they are interested in experiencing. Placements cannot be guaranteed, but providing a clear set of interests helps maximise the chance of being matched to a suitable opportunity.
