Write up to 1,000 words on a real healthcare debate, with your argument judged anonymously by people who work in medicine. The winner gets prizes worth over £800; winning or highly commended essays may be published online with your name and school, if you agree.
TheUKCATPeople Medicine Essay Competition is a free essay competition for aspiring medics, with the topic focused on a real debate in healthcare. Entrants answer one question in up to 1,000 words and submit their work online.
It is aimed at students in the later years of school who are thinking about medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine, though students interested in related courses can also take part.
Essays are judged anonymously by people who work in medicine. The competition rewards a clear argument, evidence used well, awareness of the people affected, and writing that is easy to follow and stays within the word limit.
Entrants are expected to use sources properly and write their own work; AI-generated writing is not allowed.
The winner receives prizes worth over £800, and winning or highly commended essays may be published on the website with the student’s name and school if they are happy for that to happen. The competition also provides free tips by email for students who want help approaching the question and planning their essay.
